April 2019 Commentary: Final Four CommitmentSubmitted by MidWestOne Investment Services on April 2nd, 2019
This past weekend saw the Final Four teams revealed in both the Men’s and Women’s NCAA Basketball tournaments. On the women’s side, the Hawkeye faithful enjoyed one heck of a ride which unfortunately ended short of the Final Four when the Baylor Bears beat the Iowa women Monday night. What a fantastic group of role models, from the coaching staff down through the players, including possibly the greatest basketball player in Iowa history (men’s or women’s) in Megan Gustafson. I think the time she spent working at MidWestOne pushed her over the top to greatness. Although no Iowa men’s team made a run into the second weekend of their tournament, my younger daughter just needs Michigan State to advance and she will win a bracket pool in her first try. I would love to say it is from my brilliant guidance, but I will finish 47th out of 52 in that same pool. Woof!
In keeping with the Final Four theme, I will direct you to our website for the latest LPL Research Market Commentary. In it, they discuss four important factors that could move markets in 2019. Spoiler alert, there is still room to go up in the last nine months of the year! And the Weekly Economic Commentary also enjoys the theme and gives you another take on economic factors.
Nothing screams volatility like the worst fourth quarter since the financial crisis and the worst December since the Great Depression followed immediately by one of the best first quarters for the S&P 500 Index ever. Even if we see LPL Research predictions come true for where the S&P 500 will end 2019, it is highly unlikely it will be a slow and steady walk to those new highs. More likely, the markets will give back some of the 13+% return that equities enjoyed in the first quarter. And much like when your resolve was tested in the fourth quarter of 2018, your financial plan and your track to your goals will help you stay the course and guide you through the turbulence. I am a competitive person and I hate to see statements go backwards when I do reviews. But that doesn’t mean we have failed. Like most anything in life, achieving your financial goals means a commitment to a process and not letting short-term distractions knock you off course. We are here to help you maintain that course through both good and not so good times.
Thank you very much for your support and welcome to April!!
