2018 LPL OutlookSubmitted by MidWestOne Investment Services on December 11th, 2017
This past week probably summed up 2017 neatly. On Sunday, I mowed my lawn. In December. On Monday, thunderstorms. By Tuesday, we were getting blasted with cold temperatures and frigid, high north winds. Even caught our first dusting of snow later in the week. Iowa weather is a perfect picture for volatility!
I attached three things this time. The two PDF files provide color to the 2018 outlook from the LPL Research team. There are several great charts and pictures to go with lots of text. It is an interesting read.
The third thing I attached was first designed to be for fun, but the more I thought about it, the more I discovered an appropriate story. I am finishing up our annual review season with our team and we are also concluding the budget process. When I saw the cartoon and its caption, I laughed out loud. Whether it was my own annual review or those with my team, I am sure most of you can relate to the sentiment. And as we worked through the budget process, it certainly hit home for me again.
But how does this cartoon relate to our relationship? In nearly every email you receive from me, I mention the importance of planning. Sure, a review meeting goes over recent performance, but the key piece of the review is making sure your investments match up with your expectations going forward. That doesn’t mean we let emotions like fear or greed drive the decisions, but they might tell us which side of the road to drive on. The review is equally important to make sure we are all on the same planning road to avoid the misunderstanding in the cartoon. I know this is a tough time of the year to get together, but January is right around the corner and a great time to review things.
Thank you very much for the support you give us. Have a great weekend!!
